Our Lady of Lourdes Students Walk to Help the Homeless
On Oct. 18, 75 Our Lady of Lourdes students participated in a two-mile Walk for the Homeless to help raise awareness and money for the Stephen Center of Omaha. Along the route through the Hanscom Park neighborhood, signs were posted listing facts about poverty to help the students better understand the plight of the homeless.
For over 30 years, the students at Our Lady of Lourdes have helped raise money for the Stephen Center. Each year the organization’s representatives visit the school to provide information on homelessness in our community and how students can help. This year, seventh graders helped coordinate the walk and encouraged fellow students to bring in monetary donations and baked goods to sell in support of the Stephen Center.
Student government leaders will present the donation to the Stephen Center during the school’s Thanksgiving Mass on Nov. 24. Last year, the students raised over $1,700. Totals for this year’s walk are still being determined, but the school estimates that over $2,000 will be donated to the Stephen Center.
